Building skills towards inclusive water, sanitation and hygiene

Equity And Inclusion Toolkit

Introduction

This Toolkit is a first attempt to compile tools that can be used to help make WASH programmes more inclusive.

The tools are a combination of newly developed, existing and revised methods, developed by a range of organisations (see acknowledgements). Some of these tools have yet to be thoroughly trialed and tested, yet we hope they will inspire your approaches to inclusive WASH.

Description

Part 1

Part 1 outlines several key principles for use across all of your programmes and activities in order to achieve inclusive WASH. This is regardless of whether the focus is on practice, advocacy and influencing work, diversity and human resources, or raising awareness.

The Toolkit is then structured as follows:

  1. Tools for the programme cycle: To plan, monitor and evaluate a programme in order to achieve inclusive practice.
  2. Tools for general awareness-raising: To develop knowledge and understanding of inclusive practice.
  3. Tools for advocacy and influencing: To influence and advocate policy-makers and other stakeholders for more equitable and inclusive practice.
  4. Tools for diversity and human resources: To ensure that WaterAid’s work facilitates diversity and inclusive practice internally.

Each section briefly summarises the ‘what’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ of embedding inclusive practice, linking to the relevant tools.

Part 2

Part 2 contains the tools themselves. They are indexed with a short description, and correspond to the numbers listed in Part 1.

Request for Feedback

We are currently working on an updated 2016 Equity and Inclusion Toolkit.

In the meantime our 2013 toolkit can be referred to, to inspire your approaches to inclusive WASH.

The 2013 toolkit is a combination of tools that were newly developed, existing and revised methods developed by a range of organisations (see acknowledgements). We hope these will inspire your approaches to inclusive WASH.

We are very keen to receive feedback on the tools and suggestions for additional tools and approaches that we may have overlooked.

If you have any comments, feedback or contribution, please email chelsea.huggett@wateraid.org.au
